The Diavik diamond mine, ca. 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, owned by Rio Tinto plc (60%) and Dominion Diamond Corporation (40%) (formerly Harry Winston Diamond Corporation), has been in production since 2003 and had produced about 76 million carats of diamonds from approximately 20 million tonnes of kimberlite as of December 31, 2012.

The mine is owned by a joint venture between the Rio Tinto Group (60%) and Dominion Diamond Corporation (40%), and is operated by Yellowknifebased Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. Commercial production commenced in 2003, and the lifespan of the mine is expected to be 16 to 22 years.
